The first known Blood gang was the Compton Pirus, which originated on West Piru Street in Compton, California. Formed to protect themselves from their rivals, the Crips, the gang developed quickly and became very powerful. The recognition and attention they received spread throughout the county causing other Blood gangs to form. These groups identified with the color red, the school color of Centennial High School in Compton. Generally, the Bloods align themselves with the People Nation and any gang that considers the Crips an enemy.

Nationally, members of the Bloods are predominately black; however, in the State of Idaho, the majority of Bloods are white and Hispanic. The age of members covers a broad spectrum from children, who are as young as 9 or 10 years old, to adults, who are in their 50s. However, most are in their early teens to upper 20s.

Blood gangs identify themselves with the color red. Their tattoos frequently contain the words Blood, the initials CK (Crip Killer), the number 311, or the letter B. The number 311 is representative of the Bloods, because "C" is the third
letter of the alphabet and "K" is the eleventh with CK being the
acronym for Crip Killer. The gang’s specific set name and logo and the member's moniker are usually included with these standard identifiers.
In addition to the color red and tattoos, the Bloods wear various sports gear and brands to represent their gang affiliation. Being a fan of the team is irrelevant. A sport team is chosen because it fits the gang's identity needs and has meaning through either in name or the logo. Acronyms are created from a sport team’s names, and meaning is derived from the logo. For example, the Bloods wear Chicago Bulls gear since bulls is the acronym for "Bloods usually live longer sucker," the Nike brand since Nike is the acronym for "niggers insane killin' E-Rickets" (E-Rickets is a negative name used by Bloods to refer to Crips), and the Reebok brand since Reebok is the acronym for "respect each and every Blood ok."
